EMG/Nerve Conduction Study

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are important diagnostic tools used to determine the cause of nerve and muscle problems. An EMG can detect the electrical activity of muscles. The NCS can measure the electrical signals that travel along nerves to determine their speed and intensity. It may also measure how long it takes the muscles to respond. These tests can help pinpoint the cause of muscle pain, spasms, numbness and weakness.

On the day of the test, arrive a few minutes early. Try to relax. Tense muscles can make it more difficult to get a good test. Dr. King will explain the procedure to you and help you feel comfortable. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be required to change into a gown. If you are female, be sure to bring someone with you to sit in on the procedure.
